Learn How to Root For Yourself

I know 2020 is almost over, but I feel like I’ve been blessed with a new year.

I’ve been contemplating what I want the next year to look like for me, and I’ve decided I should start working on a few passion projects. I’ve wanted to be a journalist since I was 15 years old. Over the years, I’ve had quite a few television and radio opportunities, but I never considered it a long-term option and eventually got distracted by a different goal. Each time I kept putting journalism off for later, assuming I’d eventually make my way back around to it.

After I graduated from college, I realized I wasn’t as excited about the news as I once thought, and that scared me because it was the first time in my life that I didn’t have a plan. But I prayed on it, and God made a way, and I found an even better opportunity as a video producer for a national brand. That became my story. My plans get squashed, and God comes through with something better. I never realized that journalism could look completely different from everyone else, and I can fill in the gaps for myself instead of waiting on new career opportunities.

My career path lead me to marketing and social media management (a job I literally manifested before I graduated high school). Still, I’ve neglected my personal accounts and website for quite some time now. This tweet signifies a few areas I’ve struggled with lately. I’m making an affirmation to start this next chapter with a new challenge: everything I do for work, I should be able to do for myself.

The funny thing is that I JUST realized I was vigorously promoting a company and elevating their work while failing to promote and pour into my own passion projects. That pattern leads to you feeling a little unfulfilled and confused about your purpose. I’ve learned that you need balance, and no matter how good you are at your job, you need to keep the same energy for yourself.

So here’s to being my best self and fighting the urge to shrink myself to make other people comfortable.

I hope you do the same, and I want to hear all about it. Leave me a comment so we can connect and tell me how you have chosen to root for yourself to get out of a hard place.
